Here at Honeysuckle Rabbitry I raise show quality, ARBA registered and pedigreed Mini Lop rabbits. All my breeders are registered around the age of 6 months except for some occasional non-showable breeders such as charlies or those missing nose markings, etc. I only keep non-showable rabbits if they have exceptional qualities that more then make up for whatever they lack and will improve my herd.
I very strongly feel that a great show quality animal should also have a great temperament to match, so I breed for the temperament and personality of the rabbits as well as type and color. I will allow moody rabbits to stick around long enough for their hormones to even out past the teenage rabbit rebellion months and into a few litters. If by then they are still grumpy or show any aggression at all then I seriously consider retiring them as a pet . I do not keep them as breeders at all if they pass this moodiness on to their offspring. Sixty percent of grouchiness is an inherited trait, with only forty percent being learned. I do not want to pass these traits on to future generations.
My rabbits generally do very well with kids. I take most of them when young to some classrooms, church kindergarten and primary classes, social gatherings, and I have some of my young friends come and visit to play with the babies and get them very well socialized with people. I am considering taking them into retirement homes and nursing homes as well if I can get permission from the staff. I do this to make the rabbits more use to people, noises and new surroundings thus making them friendlier to handle and easier to show. It makes them into wonderful pets and show rabbits that don't get stressed to often as well. I also want to educate people about these great animals. I teach kids how to properly hold the rabbits, answer numerous questions and just bring smiles to everyones faces. It is very rewarding.
